La Latina

La Latina is a famous neighborhood located in the center surrounded by Cebada Square and Paja Square. It is one of the most emblematic areas of Madrid and in it you can find people of all cultures and social status.  The place is frequented by locals themselves and obviously tourists. The neighborhood of La Latina is full of bars, pubs, restaurants and the traditional tavernas. As an examples, Cava Bajaa, Cava Alta, Taberna Almería or Tío Timón. In all these places you can find very good and cheap tapas.

The atmosphere is constant in the neighborhood but a good time to visit is dusk and weekends although in the spring and summer terraces are full every day. Madrid on the net you recommend going on Sunday mornings as the surrounding streets host the Rastro, a famous market outdoors in the city. In it, you can find all you can imagine and the prices are really good.

Another good time to visit this iconic neighborhood is on the feasts of the Virgin of La Paloma when festivals are organized and the streets are filled with people dressed like chulapos and chulapas. It is a festival in the district in honor of the Virgin of Paloma. It is celebrated the 15 of August.

If you want to visit this neighborhood the easiest way is by subway from line 5 to get to the stop La Latina. We recommend taking public transportation because parking your own car around can be a mess.

We hope you will visit it, enjoy his streets and his people.

It’s been a long time since I last went to the Rastro, and I can’t wait to go back there!
I have to tell you that I followed your tip in Plaza Mayor post and I went there to have squid sandwich – I missed that so much during my studies in England!!!
Please keep on showing these fantastic places of Madrid 🙂

  2. Definitely, one of the most charming areas in Madrid (and the oldest), perhaps too packed at times, but always with some kind of magical atmosphere! In my opinion some parts may get a bit annoying due to the number of tourists constantly visiting the typical places, and the subsequent rise of prices in many of the taverns and bars, but luckily there are still lots of amazing and hidden corners to visit and discover that remain unaltered, keeping their essence!! And, of course, the most avant-garde or “hip” bars that coexist with tradition, always a nice surprise!
Can´t wait to come back for a Sunday vermouth next weekend! 🙂
